When Dennis Sholl ’72 joined Lambda Chi Alpha, variety was the spice of chapter life. “The brothers were all different,” he said.
“There was a concert pianist and varsity athletes. One brother was the co-lead in the on campus play of Jesus Christ Superstar. We had brothers majoring in religion, physics, biology, chemistry, business, music, history, etc.
“It was that variety of people that drew me to Lambda Chi. So literally, like the characters in Seinfeld, we were known for nothing but involved in everything.”
Chapter life was fun for Sholl and the brothers. “Our best team was intramural football. I did not participate because I played football for the college. I remember a fun road trip was the freshman rush bus trip to Baltimore to watch a Baltimore Clippers hockey game.
“I loved the Harvey Wallbanger parties with Delta Gamma. I’m not sure how long after our graduation that continued but it is a tradition that should have continued.” Sholl enjoyed hanging out in the game room and bar the brothers built in the house.
Sholl received support from one brother in particular: “Craig Schneider ’70, he was my big brother and also my resident advisor as a freshman. When I arrived at Gettysburg I was not prepared for the academic workload or good at time management. He was a tremendous help in getting me through my freshman year academically
and set me on a good path forward.”
Sholl said the friendships he made in the chapter were true and long-lasting. “They were always there through the ups and downs of life,” he said. “We don’t live near each other but whenever we gather it is like we just saw each other yesterday.”
As a testament to the bonds members share with men from other chapters, a Lambda Chi connection impacted Sholl’s career. “One Lambda Chi alumnus from Penn State did have a huge impact on my work life,” he said.
“When I was interviewing for my first job, he was the human resources hiring manager. Everything being equal, I was hired because we shared Lambda Chi. I worked for 44 years for that company.”
